About Us
"Colonists" are members of a group, or colony, who build a new life together in a new territory. The new territory for today's new colonists is our once-neglected cities, which are being remade into rich and vibrant communities by old residents and new who have rediscovered the possibilities offered by urban neighborhoods.
The New Colonist is a web publication for people who love and live in
cities. It's not only about the cities themselves, but about life in cities.
It's not only about the biggest cities we always hear about, but about the
idea of a city as a colony of people growing together.
It's the idea that things are generally better when we live within walking
distance of each other. Living in close environments, whether they contain
1,000 or 10,000,000 people, allows us to know each other as individuals
rather than separate racial or cultural groups. It allows ideas and energy
to come together, and it helps make sure the countryside, forests and
prairies will still be there for us to enjoy when we want to get away.
On these pages we hope to showcase some of what's good about life in our cities. But it's not all about us. It's also about you. Browse around and you'll find many opportunities to share your thoughts on cities and city life.
