11/04/2010: "Politics Set Aside in an Effort to Relieve Haiti"
It's been nearly 9 months since multiple earthquakes went tearing through Haiti. The last several months have been extremely difficult for Haitian natives as they continue to sort through the devastation burying friends, family members, and unidentified victims along the way. With the country experiencing dire living conditions, Haitians are now battling rapid outbreaks of Cholera which is claiming the lives of hundreds of earthquake survivors in addition to causing serious illness to thousands of others. An Ongoing Problem
While foreign countries banded together to bring immediate aid to Haiti following the earthquakes, the decrease in media attention that the relief effort continues to suffer each subsequent month is allowing onlookers from around the world to forget about the Haitian call for help which desperately needs a constant response. With the situation worsening as people in Haiti continue to struggle to find adequate food, shelter, and health care, now is just as important of a time as ever to rekindle the momentum that the Haitian relief effort gathered earlier this year.
Setting Political Differences Aside
When President Obama asked Clinton and Bush to spearhead the Haiti relief effort, they got to work immediately without any hesitation due to political affiliation. Their call to action received an overwhelming response from citizens of all gender, race, religion and political affiliation and they successfully raised an unprecedented amount of funds over a short period of time through a variety of innovative methods. Without those funds, Haitians would have been left in a situation much worse than they are now. A situation like that is hard to imagine but a reality nonetheless. Fortunately, the response from all over the world helps show that individuals can be much more effective when they work together. This is an especially important reminder for Americans with election season in full swing. Elected officials need to remember that political affiliation should not inhibit their ability to work together.
Clinton, Bush & Band Working Together
Despite the differences that Democrats and Republicans possess, Bush, Clinton and Clinton's counselor, Doug Band, continue to work together, having fully established the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund which is still fueling a massive Haitian relief effort. Band and Clinton bring a lot of expertise to the situation as they have been running the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) for years, successfully bringing worldwide leaders and organizations together to help solve world problems. To date, the CGI has implemented hundreds of projects all over the world and touched thousands of lives. With any luck and with a little bit of help from fellow citizens, their work with the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund can be just as successful.
Relief for Haiti Still Needed: Donate to Haiti
It will be years before Haiti will start to feel like normal again, especially to natives that will always remember the way it was prior to the earthquakes. However, in the short term, Haitians can find comfort by having an adequate supply of resources like food, water, shelter, and medical aid. These are the bare necessities required just to keep them alive and making progress and, currently, the supply is scarce. Donating these resources costs a lot of money and the relief effort falls short gathering enough of it to supply the high demand for them. As many would agree, no life should be lost due to famine or illness brought on from the lack of sanitation, one of the most basic forms of health care. If we choose to donate, we can help rebuild a desperate nation and save thousands of innocent lives along the way. This holiday season we can be sure that Haitian's are hopeful that we will keep them in our hearts and in our prayers.
