04/11/2005: "Urban Gardening"

You in the suburbs may have the persisting idea that the cities are void of trees, greenery and gardening opportunities. Nonesense. Year after year, and 2005 is no exception, the green life in the city is thriving this spring. From Central Park to community gardens, all things green are growing. After a walk along West Park Commons I stopped by and found my friend Joe cleaning up his backyard garden. It pains me to stay out of my small garden, now alive with some new plants. My cat Gustoff is enjoying it right now. So, whether you have a window box or an entire garden, get out there and plant something. Vegetables are especially tasty (although be sure you plant food in new soil as it's not uncommon for city soil to be contaminated with lead, oil or other pollutants--yinz don't wanna eat that.
