Demographics:
In 2001, Pittsburgh city had a household population of 310,000. Of these, 157,000 (51 percent) were women and 152,000 (49 percent) were men. The median age was 37.0 years. Twenty-one percent of the population was under 18 years, and 15 percent was 65 and older. For people reporting one race, 67 percent were White alone; 29 percent were Black or African American; fewer than 0.5 percent were American Indian and Alaska Native; 4 percent were Asian; fewer than 0.5 percent were Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 1 percent were Some Other Race. Two percent reported Two or More Races. Fewer than 0.5 percent of the people in Pittsburgh city were Hispanic. Sixty-five percent of the people in Pittsburgh city were White, Non-Hispanic. Transportation:
Fifty-two percent of Pittsburgh city workers drove to work alone in 2001, 9 percent carpooled, 27 percent took public transportation, and 10 percent used other means. In 2001, Pittsburgh city had 139,000 occupied housing units, 72,000 (52 percent) owner occupied and 67,000 (48 percent) renter occupied. Two percent of the households did not have telephone service, and 29 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Twenty-five percent had two vehicles, and another 6 percent had three or more. The median monthly housing costs for mortgaged owners was $881, nonmortgaged owners $349, and renters $607. Twenty-four percent of owners with mortgages, 23 percent of owners without mortgages, and 54 percent of renters in Pittsburgh city spent 30 percent or more of household income on housing.
