City Places for City People
These Are Just Some of My Favorite Foods....

Where (or what) do you eat in your city? We asked our readers and they said:

Mexican food at somebody's mother's house. But in lieu of having a random mother or grandmother...El Mirador in the historic King William District (downtown) has fabulous food and great margaritas. Also, Mando's by the River--excellent Mexican seafood: whole fish, fish tacos and amazing soups. For Margaritas--La Margarita, in the Market (Mercado).
Jennifer Hussey, San Antonio, Texas

I favor the little neighborhood places--diners, small Italian restaurants, little Greek eateries, a wide variety of Mexican places, and soup and sandwich shops. Within two minutes of my office in an old southside neighborhood, I can pick from good examples of all of these.

The "Pittsburgh Sandwich" is from Primanti Brothers. While there are several locations in Pittsburgh, the gritty store in the Strip district is the only one I take visitors to. The shop features a mural [showing] a great variety of Pittsburgh natives, including Henry Mancini, Mr. Rogers, Michael Keaton (as Batman), and of course MAR-I-OH! The Primanti Bros. Sandwich consist of a mountain of your favorite meat, cheese, sweet and sour cole slaw, and french fries (yes, all that on the sandwich) stuffed between two slices of Italian Bread. The menu reads "Cheese Steak--No. 2 seller" While you may ask what's the number ONE seller (Iron City Beer, of course), asking for your cole slaw on the side during a rush will merit a response like, "Look Hun, we busy. You want it your way--Go to Burger King!"

Chipped ham (lunch meat/deli item) from Islays is what first came to my mind.
Sue McAlister, PIttsburgh, Pennsylvania

San Diego is known for Mexican food. The best places to get it are any family owned restaurant with the name ending in -berto, whether it be Filiberto's, Roberto's, Alberto's, or what have you; if the name ends in -berto, good food is to be had there.
J. R. Tolleson, San Diego, California

Texas Hot Dogs, downtown Altoona.
Gretchen Weaver, Altoona, Pennsylvania

Oyster loaf at the Original Oyster House, Market Square
Eric Miller, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Our city has many different styles of restaurants, a great variety of cuisines in price ranges to accommodate almost any taste and budget. I would like to mention El Rancho for Mexican food and the EddieV Edgewater Grill for exquisite seafood plus a fantastic bar and great jazz musicians.
Madeleine Aubry, Austin, Texas

San Jose is known for very good Vietnamese food.... Pho#1 on Stevens Creek Road is the best place in town to get two dollar sandwiches and spring rolls.
Johnny Kwon, San Jose, California

Weekend brunch at Campanile...unsurpassed! And great Thai food at Chao Krung on Fairfax.
